Why We're Unique ...
      our mission in Dearborn's Southend...

Angel House is a multicultural organization reaching out to the immigrant community in the areas of social, family, vocational, and physical needs, through services in education, health, and counseling. We provide a wide range of opportunities in volunteerism and outreach, as well as education in Arab culture and Islam for those outside this immigrant community. Our location within the largest Middle Eastern population in North America provides a unique immersion experience within this vibrant yet isolated ethnic community.

With the high level of personal interaction, small class size, and caring volunteer staff, AH prides itself on its community building and support, though mainly focusing on the personal needs of our individual students.
ESL:  English as a Second Language

AH provides ESL classes to learn and improve English language and cultural assimilation skills.  Native English speaking volunteers teach within small classes and one-to-one, focusing on vocabulary, grammar, and giving each student the opportunity to practice English while speaking in normal conversation.  Individual classes for men and women are provided. Child Care is available to enable mothers to participate in programs.
Vocational Training:  Computers and Sewing

A professor of Information Technology provides excellent and comprehensive instruction in basic computer applications, internet, and digital photography.  Comcast has wired our building for high-speed internet access.   Weekly, women in the community gather to learn basic to intermediate sewing skills, providing them opportunities for social interaction with volunteers, all the while helping these low-income families more wisely utilize their financial resources by teaching women to sew a portion of the family’s clothes.
Immersion and Short-Term Work Programs

AH provides a center for volunteers and visitors to participate in outreach and learn about Middle Eastern culture, in a uniquely hands-on immersion setting within the heart of the community, through group settings and personal, one-to-one encounters and relationships.  The Immersion Program is highly successful and in demand, with a ½ day of touring the community, visiting the mosque during prayers, and enjoying a delicious Arabic meal.  Work programs are available for those who have skills and an interest in practical areas, such as construction, light repairs, gardening, and maintenance.
